Traditional Chinese Acupuncture practice includes acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and lifestyle advice for pain, fertility, hormonal problems, stress management and many other conditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practised in the Far-East for over 3000 years. Initially originating in China TCM is now practised worldwide, with over 2000 acupuncture practitioners in the UK alone. Other countries in Asia have developed their own systems of acupuncture treatment and are often used in conjunction with the Traditional Chinese methods. TCM has developed quite independently from Western medicine and has evolved a unique understanding of health and disease. It is probably one of the most holistic medical systems available today. This means that it takes an integrated view of the person. Mind, body and emotions are seen to interact and affect each other. Chinese medicine looks at the disease and the person and has the capacity to give a unique diagnosis and corresponding treatment to the individual. Acupuncture restores and maintains health by the insertion of small, fine, flexible needles into acupuncture points just below the body surface. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means "acupuncture-moxibustion." The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health. Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction. The cups can be made of a variety of materials, including:
Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians were using cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C. |
